In United Kingdom by

n the wake of the 2015 attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, California, anti-Muslim sentiment has spiked. Part of the tour will involve taking the visitors to the mosque’s exhibition centre where there will be a plethora of topics to engage with and this will be followed by a Q&A session.  The group will be meeting up outside the SU building at 2pm. Can women prosper in Islam?

In United Kingdom by

Oppressed, inferior, and unequal – for many people, these are the first words that come to mind when thinking about women in Islam. These stereotypes confuse Islam with cultural practices and fail to recognise that Islam has empowered women with the most progressive rights since the 7th century. In Islam, women are not inferior to men. This talk will present the actual teachings of Islam regarding the rights, roles, and responsibilities of women in an intellectually stimulating way – there will also be a Q&A session at the end! This talk will be led by Zara Faris who graduated in Arabic & Islamic Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). She is now a researcher, writer, and international speaker for the Muslim Debate Initiative (MDI). Please message us if you have any questions, and check out our page for the rest of our events!  #DIW2018 #LSEISoc

The British Museum’s new exhibition Living with gods runs from 2 November 2017 to 8 April 2018 and looks at how people have been practising religion throughout human history, highlighting the common elements of worship in different faith traditions and offering “a perspective on what makes believing a vital part of human behaviour.” The exhibition as such covers a variety of aspects from personal prayers to community rituals, yet leaves out the role of music in religious practice. This is where Faiths In Tune comes in to complement the exhibition with two themed music afternoons that show common threads between different religions, expressed through music in four performances per event. Interfaith Activism; Refugee Crisis (8921)

In United Kingdom by

Eleven young sacred activists living in the U.K. Eight different faiths. Five consecutive days in Calais. One common cause; the global refugee crisis. I'm part of a young group of activists collectively working to raise awareness of refugees in our local communities. With less than 2% resettled in the U.K, we have come together to find creative solutions to raise this figure and help the U.K become a home and reunite with their families. We meet once or twice a month to listen, exchange ideas and learn from guest speakers. This is all in preparation for a week in February in Calais to assist the charity 'Help Refugees'. In between chopping carrots, providing clothes, blankets, and warm food, we will spend time with the people we want to help empower. It's an opportunity to share stories, and to listen to their hopes and their fears as an uncertain future lies ahead of them. With the wisdom of eight sacred faiths …

Faith and a Post-Truth World – Interfaith discussiFaith and a Post-Truth World – Interfaith discussion

Oxford Dictionaries has declared “post-truth” to be its international word of the year. Defined by the dictionary as an adjective “relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief”, editors said that use of the term “post-truth” had increased by around 2,000% in 2016 compared to last year. The spike in usage, it said, is “in the context of the EU referendum in the United Kingdom and the presidential election in the United States”. The rise of the word has also coincided with a claimed widening of voices in the national and international political landscape.  We would expect people to approach this topic in different ways, maybe some reflecting on the impact of the current political climate on their own personal faith, or on faith in general, or on faith’s impact in contributing to the climate, or many others. Clean birthing spaces for expectant mothers2. Ultrasound equipment to help monitor pregnancies and identify birth defects3 – Healthcare for pregnancies at risk, including anaemia, infections, …
