Care of Environment through Interfaith cooperation in St. Paul’s High School Badin On Friday, February 9, 2018 over 75 senior year students of St. Paul’s High School, Badin gathered in the school hall for a seminar on caring for the environment, our common home, through interfaith cooperation and practical action. Danish Yakoob and Fr. Liam O’Callaghan of the Columban JPIC/IRD team were the resource persons. The students are from different religious backgrounds – Muslim, Hindu and Christian. There was initially input on World Interfaith Harmony week (WIHW) which is a UN initiative and takes place every year on February 1-7. This was followed by an input on Interreligious Dialogue (IRD), learning about what it is and the attitudes needed to make it successful. There is a dire need to infuse in the education system in Pakistan a diversity of opinion, and the tools to develop ethical values among students besides training them in critical thinking and research. The fourth event took place on the evening of 10 February in Joti Center, Mirpurkhas, the educational and cultural center of Hyderabad diocese. There were 47 participants present with very good interaction and sharing.

On 9 February in St Mary’s convent high school and college, Hyderabad, 220 students and six teachers were present for a lively and interactive discussion on promoting interfaith harmony in the school, homes and communities. On 10 February a similar event took place in St Michael’s girls’ high school, Mirpurkhas with 94 students and eight teachers enthusiastically participating.    

The programmes began with a prayer, as a representative from each community came forward to light the peace and harmony candle and the three recited together the opening interfaith harmony prayer. Then Fr Liam and Danish, through the use of PowerPoint, gave input on the background to the World Interfaith Harmony Week.  Following a unanimous United Nations resolution in 2010, accepting the proposal of King Abdullah II of Jordan, this began in 2011 and is now celebrated in the first week of February every year. On February 1, the celebration of World Interfaith Harmony Week was marked with a ‘Dars-e-Quran’ at Jamia Masjid Mai Saleem Akhtar, New Sohan, Islamabad after Fajr prayers where breakfast was served among the participants and Allama AGR Chishti prayed for peace and prosperity in the world. The same day at evening some 600 mile away from Islamabad in Bahawalnagar there were held two programs in one at Hindu Temple under Pundit Channan Lal and Parkash Narian and second at Church of Pakistan Bahawalnagar lead byRev. On the third day of official UN Week World Interfaith Harmony Week, "Pray for world peace" program was celebrated. Muslim preachers & Imams prayed for love and harmony among all religions in order to establish world peace. It is also prayed that ISIS, Boko Haram and all terrorist groups in the world be removed from their roots.

On the second day of official UN Week World Interfaith Harmony Week, "A drawing by little hands for peace" program was held. In this program school children participated and prepared beautiful and inspiring drawings. A school child of class 4th Master Jafar Raza won first prize and another school child of class 5th Master Harshit Mishra got second prize. On that occassion, Mr. Saeed Khan Falahi stated that "It is the best way for building a peaceful world for all of us and for our coming generations is to teach and inspire children for peace, love, compassion, humanity, tolerance and coexistence".

On the first day of official UN Week World Interfaith Harmony Week, the children from underprivileged families were honored with a gift of woolen clothes and jackets. At that time, organizer of the event and renowned peace and human rights advocate Mr. Mohd. Abdul Saeed Khan alias Saeed Khan Falahi said, "Poverty is the worst form of human rights violations, and if the governments and people are not aware to safeguard the human rights of each and every human being without any difference, peace is not possible. All types of imbalances in the life of the people must be removed by the governments. Organized by East Education System, the purpose of the conference was to give religious minorities a space to feel at ease and express their beliefs, reservations and problems they faced, according to a press statement issued here. Representatives of the religious minorities, intellectuals and thinkers gave unanimous call for religious harmony in Pakistan and drew the attention of the audience to Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah’s views that Pakistan was a home to all communities and followers of all faiths.
