As recognized by the composers, signers, and welcomed responders to the ’Common Word Initiative’ (2007), Muslims and Christians together make up over half of our world’s population. ”Without peace and justice between these two religious communities,” the initiative reads, ”there will be no meaningful peace in the world.”

Of course World Interfaith Harmony Week is larger than just what Christians and Muslims have to speak about, but there is no doubt that the need for their increased understanding of one another is both urgent and necessary. As both a Muslim Chaplain who works on a religiously diverse school campus, and a student myself of Muslim-Christian relations (Hartford Seminary, CT), I welcome a week dedicated to the greatest commandments of our two faiths: Love of God, and Love of Neighbor.
