The Interfaith Centre of Melbourne has invited religious, spiritual and community leaders from over 20 faiths to a Luncheon to celebrate the UN World Interfaith Harmony Week in Queen's Hall, Parliament House, Melbourne, Australia. Following the National Apology in 2008 to the First Peoples of Australia, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, all Australians are on a journey to Recognition and Reconciliation. In addition, the number of refugees in Australia is growing. As people of faith and no faith, we are called to act with goodwill towards each other. Love of the Neighbour has never been more important than at this time. This year our Speakers include: Aunty Joy Wandin Murphy AO, the Senior Elder of the Wurundjeri People, who will speak about 'Working Together' from indigenous perspectives. Sheikh Isse Abdo Musse, Vice-President, Board of Imams and Imam of the Virgin Mary Mosque, will speak about 'Love of God and Love of the Neighbour' in the Koran. Imam Afroz Ali, Founder and President, Al-Ghazzali Centre for Islamic Sciences and Human Development, will speak on 'Who Are our Neighbours?' We anticipate that after a period of reflection a project entitled 'Working Together' will be created.

Kahrmel Wellness are hosting an educational conference geared to empower faith communities to respond effectively and efficiently to Domestic Violence and Abuse (DVA) cases that occur in their environments. This event is ideal for multi-faith leaders, members of multi-faith communities, statutory service workers, academics, survivors of DVA, politicians, and professionals who work with victims and perpetrators of DVA. The aim is to enhance understanding on the plight and struggles of victims of DVA in faith communities, which is normally worsened by untold difficulties they experience. Furthermore, they will be deploying education on how to boldly and radically work with perpetrators of DVA. There will also be education on the impact of DVA on children in faith communities, and the challenges that they face. Effective work with child survivors of DVA promotes their development in all dimensions, especially spiritually, psychologically and emotionally. Expect to leave the conference equipped, educated and empowered on how to assist adult and child victims in faith communities, while working effectively with perpetrators.

Creighton emphasizes love and acceptance for all people from various different religions, cultures and social backgrounds. In an effort to put this teaching into practice, St. John’s Church will hold an interfaith service. This service marks the first of several interfaith services which will be offered as part of a new Creighton tradition. The title of this service is “Celebrating One Creighton: Interfaith Blessings on the Spring Semester.” Attendees of this interfaith service can expect to see various faith rituals, music and liturgy and a procession of students representing diverse organizations on campus. Rev. Timothy R. Lannon, S.J. will lead this service, and the entire Creighton community is invited to attend and worship in a new way. Campus Ministry Liturgy Coordinator David Scholl played a major role in organizing this event. Scholl worked closely with other members of University Ministry to make Lannon’s vision of an interfaith service a reality.

Patel, director of Interfaith Youth Core, will speak at Duke University Feb.3 about the place of interfaith understanding in the liberal arts curriculum. Laurie Patton, dean of Trinity College of Arts and Sciences at Duke, will respond to Patel’s talk as part of the event. The talk, “Interfaith Leadership in Public Life,” will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Duke Divinity School’s Goodson Chapel. It is free and open to the public. “In this age of growing awareness of religious diversity, it is important to build up leaders who are well-equipped for engaging difference meaningfully,” said Christy Lohr Sapp, associate dean of Duke Chapel. “The college campus is a great place to cross boundaries and connect with diverse people and worldviews.” The Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC) seeks to promote religious diversity and trains college students in approaches to leadership that respect different faiths. “We view religious and philosophical traditions as bridges of cooperation,” the group’s website says. There is unfortunately, an orchestration of disharmony and ill will by certain quarters in Malaysian society. This breeds enmity, misunderstanding and conflict. There is a need for Malaysians to display an alternative dialogue or conversation that while we agree or disagree we do this in humility and mutual respect. We are hosting this Dialogue for Harmony in line with the United Nations agenda to promote harmony between all people regardless of their faith. The UN recognised this need for dialogue among different faiths and religions to enhance mutual understanding, harmony and cooperation among people During this World Interfaith Harmony Week which was aside by the UN General Assembly on Oct 20, 2010, the UN encourages “all States to support the spread of the message of interfaith harmony and goodwill in the world’s churches, mosques, synagogues, temples and other places of worship, on a voluntary basis and according to their own religious traditions or convictions”. With this in mind both GMM & Proham is inviting all the leaders of religious institutions, voluntary and civil society movements committed to fostering interfaith harmony to come for a discussion and time of reflection on strengthening peace and harmony in Malaysian society and the region.
