Weaving in words, images of people, places, and sacred artworks, the DVD exemplifies the common values that bind us together as a community, as well as respecting the differences. A COMMON WORD TOWARDS A COMMON PEACE

Start: Monday 4th of February 2013 12:00:13 AM
End: Monday 4th of February 2013 12:00:16 AM
Location: U.P. Diliman, Quezon and others (see description of project)City, Metro Manila, Philippines, Quezon City, Cebu City, Zamboanga City, Iligan City, PH
Organizers: Philippine Center for Islam and Democracy and Noorus Salam In line with our continuing effort to engage religious groups and other sectors in peace building and harmony among Filipinos of all faiths, the Philippine Center for Islam and Democracy (PCID), in partnership with the Noorus Salam, will conduct an interfaith dialogue in celebration of the World Interfaith Harmony Week (WIHW). In the Philippines, it was the PCID that led the celebration of the WIHW in 2011 with a Solidarity Dinner held in the Garden Orchid Hotel, Zamboanga City, Mindanao. 150 faith leaders joined in this celebration of peace. The World Interfaith Harmony Week is a celebration adopted by the United Nation, which was proposed by H.M. King Abdullah II of Jordan in 2010. This is based on the pioneering work of The Common Word Initiative, which started in 2007. It calls for Muslim and Christian leaders to engage in a dialogue based on two common fundamental religious Commandments: Love of God and Love of Neighbor; without having to compromise their basic religious tenets. This Interfaith Week will provide a platform for all interfaith groups and groups of goodwill to become aware of each other to build and improve their relationships, and strengthen their movement and positions by building ties and avoiding duplicating each other’s efforts. This year marks the 5th year of PCID’s efforts to bring the message of A Common Word to the grassroots. For the past 5 years, PCID had been engaging the Muslim religious teachers in infra-faith workshops about the importance of harmony among Muslims and Christians and the need for interfaith dialogue. Many of the participants, while supportive of the ideals of the historic document, stressed the need to popularize and contextualize the highly doctrinal “A Common Word” in the context of the social, political and cultural issues that animate Muslim communities in the Philippines. On November 9, 2011 PCID finally held a national interfaith conference in the University of the Philippines, attended by faith leaders from the National Ulama Conference of the Philippines, Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, Latter Day Saints of Jesus Christ, National Council of Churches in the Philippines, Catholic Women’s League, Loyola School of Theology Ateneo, Peacemakers Circle, United Church of Christ of the Philippines, among many. Dr. Rick Love of the Peace Catalyst International, who has been a strong advocate of ACW and interfaith dialogue, flew from the United States to join the forum. The celebration of WIHW organized by PCID and Noorus Salam this year will be held simultaneously in 4 major cities: Quezon City for the National Capital Region, Cebu City for the Visayas, Zamboanga City for Region 9, and Iligan City for Region 10. The events will be intimate, a gathering of 20 to 25 faith leaders, to share how harmony among peoples of all faiths is essential for genuine and lasting peace to take root in our communities. The dialogue will elicit sharing from the participants of their ideas and understanding on the theme: “A Common Word, A Common Peace.” Inshallah, the dialogue will also elicit their commitment to spread the message of A Common Word: Love God, Love your Neighbor. PCID feels that much more effort is needed to let interfaith harmony take root. In our experience, beautiful statements are released at the international and national levels but these do not reach the grassroots. We need to intensify interfaith discussions, which highlight the themes of Love of God and Love of Neighbor, as the foundation for serious dialogue and peaceful engagement between Islam, Christianity and other religious sectors. Thus, a video will be prepared and disseminated to share the message of interfaith harmony with the wider community. Further, this year we are working closely with the Noorus Salam, an organization of Muslim women religious teachers and civil society leaders, to propagate the meaning of ACW and the true relevance of interfaith harmony. The simultaneous events in 3 major cities are organized by the Noorus Salam and PCID, supported by members of the National Ulama Conference of the Philippines. In the National Capital Region, the event will be held at the NCPAG Annex Building Conference Room, University of the Philippines, Quezon City. In Zamboanga City, it will be held in the Women Support Center, RT Lim Boulevard, Zamboanga City. In Cebu City, at the National Commission on Muslim Filipino (NCMF) Office. In Iligan City, at Mahad Al-Nur Al-Islamiya, Ceanuri Village, Camague. PCID HARMONY LINK VIDEO, below: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LuRKbpvUEg&feature=youtu.be
