Ref: Secretary-General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu hailed the passing of the UN General Assembly Resolution proclaiming the first week of February each year as the World Interfaith Harmony Week.
He highlighted the fact that the UN resolution falls in line with OIC policies, including the initiative for interfaith dialogue by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia.
The OIC chief executive, in a message released from Jeddah Sunday, also extended his warm felicitations and congratulations to His Majesty, King Abdullah II, of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan for his vision and wisdom in initiating the proposal and for its ultimate adoption by the world body.
He called on the OIC member-states and the international community to observe the World Interfaith Harmony Week every year in a befitting manner so as to help engender a culture of tolerance and understanding among diverse faiths and civilizations.
“Promoting interfaith harmony lies at the heart of the priority accorded to cultural diplomacy of the OIC,” said Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu.
“Observance of the World Interfaith Harmony Week will serve peoples of all faiths and beliefs to coexist in peace, harmony and goodwill,” he added.
