When children and families experience a traumatic event, emotional and behavioral responses may vary. Helpers may feel ill equipped to intervene effectively because of the complexity of trauma and impact of trauma on all persons involved. In this training, participants will explore The National Child Traumatic Stress Network’s 12 Core Concepts of trauma. At the end of this training, participants will: 1. KNOWLEDGE- Identify the 12 core concepts of trauma. 2. ANALYZE- Correlate emotional and behavioral responses to the core concepts. 3. EVALUATION- Consider a case study to summarize characteristic of the case which relate to each concept. 4. APPLICATION- Project how to utilize learning when supporting persons in the faith community. Dr. Nicole G. Johnson, Ph.D., LPC, ACS, CAADC, CCDP-D, BC-TMH, has over 20 years of experience working in the behavioral health care system providing substance use and mental health services in Philadelphia, surrounding counties and several states. Dr. Johnson is an Assistant Professor and Program Director of the Community and Trauma Counseling Program at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In addition, she currently oversees Jefferson’s Trauma Education Network’s Interfaith Leaders’ Learning Collaborative on Trauma, a workgroup of faith leaders who receive ongoing behavioral health education. Dr. Johnson is a Past President of the Greater Philadelphia Area Counseling Association. Dr. Johnson operates a private practice and provides trainings to non-profit and faith-based organizations in suicide prevention, mental health disorders and substance use disorders.
