World Interfaith Harmony Week
Manilla Bulletin
MANILA, Philippines – Recognizing the need for dialogue among various faiths and religions in enhancing mutual understanding, harmony, and cooperation among people, the United Nations adopted a consensus resolution in October 20, 2010, proposed by Jordan proclaiming the first week of February as World Interfaith Harmony Week.
Worldwide, there is a great effort taking place within and about religion. People of religious faith are prepared to regard those of a different faith with respect, dignity, and love. Humanity all over the globe is bound not only by mutual interests but by the shared commandments to love God and neighbor.
In past resolutions, the United Nations has been successful in initiating actions for interreligious and intercultural dialogue and the elimination of all forms of intolerance and discrimination. This has resulted in expanded peace and harmony undertakings that have spread goodwill in the world’s churches, mosques, synagogues, temples, and other places of worship.
The latest United Nations resolution on promoting peace and harmony in the world seeks to turn the tide against any negative movement, by coordinating and uniting efforts among all interfaith groups doing positive work through one focused annual theme. It seeks to harness the collective strength of places of worship and encourage all preachers to commit themselves to peace and harmony in the world.
Interfaith Harmony starts with all of us. Its rippling effects have positive consequences for a world in need of inter-religious harmony and mutual acceptance which has unprecedented potential to turn the tide against religious tensions.
