Interfaith Culinary Arts Program – Report

In by mranderson

As part of World Interfaith Harmony Week, Mosaic: Interfaith Youth Action hosted a special Valentine’s Day–themed Interfaith Culinary Arts Program that brought together youth from diverse religious backgrounds for dialogue, learning, and service. The program centered on making handmade chocolates for a local women’s shelter, combining culinary creativity with a shared commitment to compassion and community care. Participants began by exploring the historical and religious significance of Valentine’s Day. The group examined the story of St. Valentine within Christian tradition, including themes of sacrificial love, moral courage, and service. The discussion then expanded to consider how love, charity, and care for the vulnerable are core values across faith traditions, including Jewish teachings on loving-kindness (chesed), Islamic principles of mercy (rahma) and charity (sadaqah), and similar concepts found in other religious and cultural traditions. This dialogue created space for participants to reflect on both differences and shared values in how love is expressed and practiced. Following the dialogue session, youth collaborated to prepare and package handmade chocolates, which were donated to a local women’s shelter as a gesture of solidarity and encouragement. The act of preparing food together fostered teamwork, relationship-building, and informal conversations that deepened mutual understanding. The service component translated dialogue into action, reinforcing the idea that interfaith harmony is not only about conversation but also about collective care. The program strengthened interreligious relationships among participants, increased understanding of the religious dimensions of Valentine’s Day, and provided tangible support to women in need. By integrating dialogue, education, and service, the Interfaith Culinary Arts Program embodied the spirit of World Interfaith Harmony Week and demonstrated how shared acts of compassion can build bridges across communities.
