Connected with the World Interfaith Harmony Week, the local chapter of UPF in Helsinki, Finland, held a gathering on Feb. 8, 2025, in their new Peace Center with the theme: "Toward Harmony in the Human Family."
MC Keijo Mikkanen opened the evening with a reminder of the initiative’s purpose: to provide a platform for meeting and sharing with people of faith and goodwill.
In his welcoming remarks, Hannu Hassinen of UPF noted that before there is interfaith, there are faiths. While faith is paramount for us all, we gather to understand each other, discover our commonalities, and impact society together.
Pastor Linus Anyamele of the Watchman Catholic Charismatic Renewal Movement emphasized mutual and interconnected characteristics of the Creator-God’s family, quoting from Jesus that peacemakers are called sons of God.
Imam Abdul Tahirou-Varjonen, founder and Chair of CANIP-Finland, found key elements expressed in the invitation to today’s event: "Amid the distressful circumstances of the world, religious people are called to uphold the light of hope based on factors of life rooted in our Creator … that by our commitment to mutual respect and in brotherhood and sisterhood of various beliefs, we will meet together to share on our theme." He said that challenges today are bigger than before. However, our common ground is our commitment to uphold strong and vital families—the core of society.
Pastor Janne Hassinen of the Lutheran Church, with years of experience in Africa and Finland as a therapist and counselor, explained that an essential method for mutual understanding and in the journey toward harmony goes through digesting the pain and suffering of the past.
Josef Svacina, National Director of the Family Federation, representing Unificationism, referred to words in the autobiography of the founder Rev. Sun Myung Moon.
In a symbolic gesture of rivers flowing into one big stream, the faith representatives poured water from separate bottles into a single bowl.
The program was brought to an uplifting end by pianist Mrs. Evgenia Manning with her rendering of Mozart’s Sonata No. 5, G Major, Part 1.
Discussion over refreshments went well into the evening, with wishes for continued engagement on the theme.
