Part 2 of
#InterfaithHarmonyWeek
Islam has been part of Bulgaria for more than six centuries and today represents the country’s second‑largest religion, with over 600,000 believers. This presence is culturally diverse, including ethnic Turks, Pomaks who speak Bulgarian, Roma Muslims, and smaller groups such as the Alians with their distinct spiritual traditions. Their history dates back to the Ottoman era in the 14th century and continues to shape Bulgaria today. Alongside this diversity, Bulgaria maintains traditions of coexistence: every year during Ramadan, the President hosts an official Iftar that brings together leaders from Muslim, Orthodox Christian, Jewish, and Catholic communities. It’s a symbolic moment where different faiths share the same table, reaffirming a tradition of mutual respect and peaceful living.
