HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL

I awoke at 4 AM on January 1 5780 of the Jewish Year as the darkness of 2019 carries over to 2020. My teenage daughter and her friends were up late celebrating the New Year. I hope they will awake to a brighter day as 2020 begins.

I realized that this darkness extends back 400 years as the spirit of Squanto, the Native Wampanoag, and the good intentions of Puritan Minister John Eliot were trampled by Europeans seeking freedom and God. The Natives had shown the surviving half of the Mayflower residents how to plant, fish, harvest and survive, yet even the Praying Hands Native Tribe, the first tribe to recognize the value of Christianity converted by Eliot, were pushed aside.

The Europeans built golden calves to themselves. Thinking the God within them made them Gods they interpreted the ten commandments to accept greed, selfishness, and self-righteousness as their God-given right. They replaced the rights they were seeking with this self-righteousness. Franklin, Rutledge and the Founders recognized that within the Native Iroquois Constitution lay the spiritual/material blending they were looking for to base our system of government. They chose to base a good part of our constitution on the Iroquois Constitution.

As the numbers of the Puritans and Pilgrims swelled to fill the East Coast the Colonists ignored the reasons the Europeans came here and the fact that the basis of their (our) constitution is the spiritual vision of the Iroquois. This has led to these 400 years of darkness, hatred, and greed. This ignorance spread like cancer for 400 years pitting faiths, academics, and politics against each other worldwide in a take no prisoners war that rages on today.

Can the United Nations World Interfaith Harmony Week shot in the dark be expanded by the World Conference of Mayors, and the Historic Black Townships and Settlement Alliance into a year-long effort? Can they bring together these faiths, academics, and politicians to work together instead of against each other? Can we help the Great Council of Iroquois reconvene as part of this New Beginning in 2020? Can we solve the world's problems in five years?

The game is afoot. We will know during the January 25th to February 7 timeframe if we are moving forward or will remain mired in our own self-interest.
