On the occasion of the 75th Anniversary of the Holocaust, Professor Mohammed D. Dajani is hoping to be able to take 10 students from Israel, five Palestinian and five Israeli students, to the former concentration camp Auschwitz. Professor Mohammed Dajani Daoudi is a Palestinian professor and founder of the Wasatiya Institute in Jerusalem. In March 2014 he already escorted 27 Palestinian students to the memorial site in order to teach about the Holocaust and Antisemitism. Holocaust education in Palestine faces a huge barrier. The Holocaust is partly perceived as the cause of the Palestinian 1948 Nakba and the persistent Israeli occupation. For this reason, the Holocaust is not being thought in Palestinian schools or universities leading to misconceptions and prejudices about the Holocaust amongst Palestinian students. The visit to Auschwitz left the former Palestinian participants with unforgettable sad memories. The visit taught them that the impact of the Holocaust continued after liberation and that it is still part of the fabric of Jewish society, thinking, and psychology. Palestinians, as well as the Arab and Muslim world, need to be educated about the Holocaust. Also, Jews need to know there were many Arabs opposed to Nazism and there were also those who helped save Jews during the Holocaust. Breaking this taboo leaves the door wide open for social change, reconciliation, and peaceful coexistence between Jews and Muslims. The visit to Auschwitz aims to be a call upon the world to repudiate all forms of hatred including religious persecution and discrimination against Jews, Christians, and Moslems everywhere. We aim to undertake the journey to Auschwitz early this year, but a precise date is not set yet. Because of the importance of this project and the need of foundings, we would like to apply for the Interfaith Harmony Week. Any help and support would make an enormous difference in realizing this project.
