Dear Faith Leaders and Friends in El Paso County,
In 2010, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution A/RES/65/5 which recognized the first week of February every year as World Interfaith Harmony Week. Through its declaration, the United Nations "pointed out that mutual understanding and inter-religious dialogue constitute important dimensions of a culture of peace." Annually during World Interfaith Harmony Week, the "General Assembly encourages all States to spread the message of interfaith harmony and goodwill in the world’s churches, mosques, synagogues, temples and other places of worship during that week, on a voluntary basis and according to their own religious traditions or convictions."
This year, the Faith Relations Committee of Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity--a group of individuals from a variety of different faith backgrounds, belief traditions, and spiritual practices, who unite to build affordable homes for El Paso County families from diverse faith backgrounds as well as families with no faith background--chose to compose their own declaration recognizing the 2022 World Interfaith Harmony Week, highlighting the United Nations’ 2010 Resolution.
As housing becomes increasingly more expensive throughout El Paso County, Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity holds steadfast to its conviction that everyone deserves a decent, affordable place to live, and seeks to offer opportunities for individuals and diverse faith communities to engage with the local community, live out their faith, and support families in El Paso County through our Interfaith Build for Unity Project. Out of a love for God and love for our neighbors, Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to bringing people together to build homes, community, and hope here in the county we all call home. We recognize that every faith can be put into action, and that together, we can help support families in need of affordable housing. It is our hope that this declaration not only highlights the importance of interfaith dialogue and of extending dignity and respect to others throughout our community, but also inspires individuals from a wide variety of different backgrounds, faith traditions, and spiritual practices to unite in helping families in El Paso County.
