The first week of February is World Interfaith Harmony Week. The World Interfaith Harmony Week is based on a call for Muslim and Christian leaders to engage in a dialogue based on two common fundamental religious Commandments; Love of God, and Love of the Neighbour. As part of the week, the Multifaith Chaplaincy Service at College hosted the MEND exhibition in the atrium, which highlights how British Muslims and how they’re misrepresented widely in the media recently. MEND collaborates with different partners and organisations to ensure that Islamophobia is regarded as just as socially unacceptable as racism, anti-Semitism and xenophobia. Tom McCready, College Faith Advisor, said “Lots of students stopped to chat to us about the exhibition and about how they too are disappointed with how Muslim culture is portrayed in the media and made to be scapegoats for many problems. Our aim this week was to reach people, and not just those who are religious, but from all backgrounds, to encourage respect and friendship regardless of belief.” Imam Umar from Doncaster Jamia Mosque was also at the College on Tuesday to stop and chat to students, and he reflected that, “the work that the College’s multifaith team are providing shows the great love and respect we all have for each other as humans.” The exhibition continued in Doncaster’s CAST venue for the remainder of the week.
