Join us to learn about and try Tonglen meditation in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Your facilitator, Khenpo Kunga Sherab is a Ph.D. student whose primary research interest lay in Buddhist and contemporary scientific theories of consciousness, karma, and reincarnation. Before coming to U of T Khenpo taught for many years at Dzongsar Institute, India, and Zurmang Buddhist College in Sikkim, India. The word "tonglen" is a Tibetan term that translates as "sending and taking." Tonglen meditation, therefore, focuses on connecting with, developing, and learning how to apply compassion in everyday life. The practice belongs to a group of Buddhist teachings called Mind Training which helps to train the mind to be more empathetic and awake. The practice centers on imagining that as we exhale, we are sharing the light of well-being and its causes with everyone who needs it. Similarly, as we inhale, we are relieving others of the darkness of suffering and its causes.
