Mosaic: Interfaith Youth Action’s Interfaith Culinary Arts Program is an innovative initiative that brings young people together to explore religious traditions through the universal language of food. By engaging in hands-on cooking experiences, youth learn about the rich cultural and spiritual significance of dietary practices across different faiths, fostering understanding and interfaith dialogue in a dynamic and engaging setting. As part of our programming for UN World Interfaith Harmony Week, our February 4th session will focus on kosher dietary laws in Judaism. Youth will explore the principles of kashrut, including the separation of meat and dairy, permitted and prohibited foods, and the deeper spiritual and ethical considerations behind these laws. To bring this learning to life, participants will bake challah bread, a staple of Jewish tradition, while discussing its role in Shabbat and Jewish rituals. This session builds on previous Interfaith Culinary Arts Program experiences where youth have:
  • Made fish tacos while learning about the Catholic tradition of eating fish on Fridays during Lent.
  • Prepared pasta primavera, exploring vegetarianism and its connection to Dharmic faiths like Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.
  • Cooked chicken shawarma, gaining insight into Halal dietary guidelines in Islam.
By cooking and sharing meals together, youth not only develop practical culinary skills but also cultivate a deeper appreciation for the diverse faith traditions that shape our world. The Interfaith Culinary Arts Program is a testament to the power of food in breaking down barriers, building relationships, and creating a more inclusive and harmonious society.
