“Shalom from Kolkata”: A Synagogue Visit with Future Christian Leaders: Celebrating World Interfaith Harmony Week
Today, I had the profound privilege of standing at the intersection of faiths. Honoured of guiding a wonderful group of first year seminary students through the historic Beth El and Maghen David Synagogues 🕍.
We dove into the basics of #Judaism from the sacred words of the Torah to the beautiful traditions of the Jewish festivals. We traced the footsteps of the #Kolkata #Jewish community that once thrived here, leaving behind a legacy of faith and grandeur.
We talked about our shared roots, our common texts, and the importance of respect.
This is what interfaith activism looks like. It is not about agreeing on everything. It is about being curious, not defensive. It is about listening to each other's stories.
As an interfaith educator, moments like these remind me why engaging in #Interfaith matters. We weren't just tourists admiring the exquisite marble floors or the majestic architectural design. We were Interfaith pilgrims, walking into the living world of the "People of the Book."
For these young Christian leaders, stepping into a synagogue is a homecoming of sorts. We explored the soul of Judaism, the covenant, the concept of Tikkun Olam (repair the world) and the incredible story of the Baghdadi Iraqi-Jewish merchants who built this community and shaped the history of Kolkata.
To my young friends training for the #Christian ministry thank you for your open hearts and open minds & deep questions. May you always seek to understand before being understood.
To the respected Jewish guardians of this sacred space thank you Mrs A.M Cohen David Ashkenazy for sharing your heritage. You are the keepers of a beautiful, vital flame.
The future of Interfaith is collaborative.
Shalom Salaam Shlomo Shanti
Interfaithfully Yours
