The United Nations passed a resolution to create World Interfaith Harmony Week annually to “support…the spread of the message of interfaith harmony and goodwill in the world’s churches, mosques, synagogues, temples and other places of worship.”

World Interfaith Harmony Week will take place the first week of February.

Jordan’s King Abdullah proposed an interfaith week on Sept. 23, stating he wanted the “world’s people” to promote tolerance by sharing in each others religious beliefs.

“The fact is, humanity everywhere is bound together, not only by mutual interests, but by shared commandments to love God and neighbor, to love the good and neighbor,” he said.

The week is designed so religious leaders around the world could coalesce around a specific event with a specific time.

The goal of the World Interfaith Harmony Week is to give voice to those who may not have the means to promote tolerance, and give a platform for all religions to organize and work together.
