Hundreds form protective human circle around mosque after Islamophobic attack

Hundreds of people have come together to form a peace ring around a mosque in honour of the six men killed in the Quebec terrorist attack last week.
University student charged with shooting six people dead in Quebec mosquePeople of all ages and background linked hands around the Ummah Masjid in Halifax in support of the Muslim faith on Friday.
Around 300 people, young and old, circled the mosque following noon prayers and held hands.
Norm Horofker, the minister at the Universalist Unitarian Church of Halifax, organised the event following the terrorist attack on a mosque in Quebec City on January 29.

He told MetroNews: ‘In a way we’re standing on guard. We’re making a statement that what’s going on within this building is sacred and is something that we want to protect and preserve, and allow people the peace to pray without threat.’
Ashraf Al Zaman, the executive chair of the Ummah Masjid, said the support from the Halifax community in the days following the attack has been ‘amazing.’

‘Many times we do not realise how much we care about each other, because many times our perception deceives us in the sense that we look at people, we look at their religion, their colour, their ethnicity.’
‘Only in this kind of situation where something inhumane happens, at that time we start to realise more about our … human side.’
Lt. Col. John O’Donnell, a chaplain with the Canadian Armed Forces, said it was great to see the persity of people who participated.
