This event is weekly on Sundays from 10 a.m. till 12 noon. It includes meditation and prayer, music, a featured presenter, and a time for dialogue. It includes people of a wide variety of faiths and allows time for everyone to share their moral and spiritual concerns. These gatherings are being held in a venue that does not have a specific faith orientation, so that people of various faith orientations will feel welcome and on an equal basis in their participation. It has taken quite some time to find a venue of this kind. We have three books that I authored or co-authored, that are being used at the gatherings. They are: World Scriptures, World Scriptures Vol 2 (which looks to the future), and Science and Spirituality.

As part of its commitment to foster a global culture of peace, the Islamic Circle of North America joins in celebrating World Interfaith Harmony Week during the first week of February. Faith is the central aspect of life for billions across the globe, be they Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, or from any other religious community. ICNA’s vision includes promoting meaningful discourse between followers of different faiths. Cooperation and dialogue are built upon a foundation of mutual respect. In an increasingly connected world, it is especially important to foster understanding among people of different belief systems. Islam encourages Muslims to “Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best.” [16:125] “To each of you We prescribed a law and a method. Had Allah willed, He would have made you one nation [united in religion], but [He intended] to test you in what He has given you; so race to [all that is] good.” [5:48] Interfaith harmony is crucial at a time when the world is witness to the atrocious events enacted in the name of religion by one community against another. This violence, whether it is political, social, or environmental, is an affront to the teachings of any religion. In the transformational times the world is going through, it is imperative for the faith communities in masajid (mosques), synagogues, churches, temples and other places of worship, to become forces for societal good. “By working together we can generate positive change and effectively tackle the problems that plague us all – poverty, exploitation, and violence,” said Naeem Baig, president of ICNA. As Guyana joined the rest of the world in observance of the United Nations (UN) designated World Interfaith Harmony Week, President Donald Ramotar today called for a redoubling of efforts to foster greater understanding and appreciation among the different religious faiths in Guyana. World Interfaith Harmony Week was today officially launched at the Guyana International Conference Centre, Liliendaal. The ceremony opened with prayers and messages from the Hindu, Christian, Muslim, Baha’i, Rastafarian, Indigenous and Seventh Day Adventist bodies, and the United Apostolic Mystical Council. The President, who delivered the keynote address, boasted of the beauty and uniqueness of Guyana’s multi-ethnic, multi-cultural society, and the commendable level of tolerance that exists among the various faiths. Four years ago, World Interfaith Harmony Week became an annual event that is observed during the first week of February, as the UN General Assembly’s way of urging countries to encourage activities aimed at fostering greater dialogue among people of different faiths. The need to intensify such dialogue was underscored by the desire to promote a culture of genuine peace in a world driven, in many places, by religious and sectarian divides, since tolerance and mutual understanding are general aspirations shared by faiths. The President said that his Government fully supports the goal of increased dialogue amongst faiths, and subscribed to the view that dialogue is the best means of resolving conflicts especially those exacerbated by ethnic and religious conflicts.

At this Friday February 7th, 2014 Jewish Shabat service, the Muslim community will participate in the Jewish service which include readings from the Quran and Torah as well choir singing of both Jewish and Muslim songs. We will also be sharing dinner together.
