FREMONT -- Members of the East Bay Muslim community are reaching out to other faiths with an open house Feb. 16 at a Fremont mosque to commemorate World Interfaith Harmony Week. The annual event, initiated by the United Nations General Assembly in a 2010 proclamation, is celebrated in the first week of February as a way to promote harmony between all people regardless of their faith. The open house is being hosted by the Islamic Society of East Bay, at 33330 Peace Terrace. It is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16. "We are here to show our friends and neighbors that American Muslims are committed to the well-being of our community and continue to play an active role in our society," said Ahsan Baig, chair of the mosque's outreach committee. WORLD INTERFAITH HARMONY WEEK Monday, February 4 – Friday, February 8, Various Locations Join the spiritual and religious communities of Northeastern University and the Center for Spirituality, Dialogue and Service (CSDS) as we celebrate World Interfaith Harmony Week. This annual observance is promoted by the United Nations as a time to gain greater understanding of different global religious traditions as we pursue peace, social justice, and sustainability together. We will begin the celebration with an Open House in the Sacred Space (200 Ell Hall) Monday February 4, 3:00-5:00 pm and conclude the week with an interfaith opportunity called “Renew!: A Spirituality & Leadership Retreat” at the Friendly Crossways retreat center in beautiful hills of Harvard, Mass, Friday February 8-Sunday February 10.
