This week we are highlighting World Harmony Interfaith week observance by the UN & showing how we can join with those of other faiths to come together as a force for good in our communities in loving our neighbours through service. For five years volunteers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints & volunteer members of the Sikh Guru Nanak’s Mission, Nottingham have worked alongside each other preparing food, packaging the cooked food & then driving it so it can be distributed by volunteers to the vulnerable & homeless of the community. Food donations are also raised by The Church of Jesus Christ to help support the GNM. Volunteer Jo says “the people of the Sikh faith are so kind, friendly & generous. It doesn’t matter that we differ in our beliefs, we respect each other & were friends from the start. It’s been a pleasure to be part of a great working team, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my experience at the Guru Nanak’s Mission & with the people of the Sikh faith”. Paul & Naomi say “we have seen many kind acts of generosity & love from the people we have been privileged to volunteer with. On one occasion, all meals, approx 100, had been given out. Whilst packing away a man dashed toward them, wanting a meal. One of the volunteers went to a fast food takeaway & bought him a meal.” Volunteers from the two faiths have also attended social events with each other, further increasing friendships, building understanding & strengthening ties. Volunteers have continued their work through these difficult times and currently help gather donations for breakfast boxes for children. Where can you join forces with people of goodwill & faith to volunteer & support your community? Try looking at #justserve.org for opportunities in your area.
