Romero House, a community of welcome for refugees, celebrates its annual Howcroft Lecture Series. This lecture features Toronto City Councillor Ausma Malik, the first hijab-wearing Muslim woman elected to public office in Canada. Councillor Malik is known for staring down hate and inspiring hope for racial justice, economic reconstruction, and democratic renewal. Ms. Malik is considered one of the most exciting new members of Toronto City Council. This lecture will focus on The Power of In-Between: Building Neighbourhoods and Communities. Where is community made? Community is formed away from the spotlight. It's made in the seemingly ordinary interactions between neighbours, the prosaic negotiations between people on the street, the invisible encounters that make spaces of belonging. These are places of change and power, where compassion, faith and justice are not only ideas, but are lived.
