On Wednesday, February 2, 2022, in line with its annual tradition, the Community of Sant'Egidio in Brussels will host the "Interfaith Harmony Breakfast", in the context of the United Nations-sponsored World Interfaith Harmony Week and the International Day of Human Fraternity. That day, representatives of all religions recognised by the Belgian government will gather at the Hotel Van der Valk, Culliganlaan 4, 1831 Diegem (near Brussels Airport), from 8 am to 10 am, to hold an open-hearted and wide-ranging conversation on various topics that demonstrate the enduring social relevance of churches and religions, including the role of religions in charity work and in helping those most in need, such as through the opening and management of humanitarian corridors for vulnerable migrants. Mr. Sammy Mahdi, Belgium's Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration, has confirmed his participation in these breakfast discussions. The Humanitarian Corridors will certainly form part of the conversation, but other aspects of asylum and migration policy will also be discussed. Naturally, all applicable COVID rules will be respected, including social distancing, the use of proper ventilation, as well as prior vaccination and mask-wearing expected of all participants. Given the observance of these security measures, Sant'Egidio sincerely hopes to be able to hold this meeting in an in-person format, rather than a virtual one which would not allow for the discussion to have the same spontaneous and open-hearted dynamic.
