Interfaith Candle Lighting Ceremony

Interfaith Harmony Week Activities Planned in Pakistan

Interfaith Candle Lighting Ceremony, February 2, at the famous shrine of Hazrat Shah Shams Tabrez. This shrine was built in 1330 A.D. honor of the Sufi saint who came from Baghdad and died in 1276 at Multan. The tomb is square, 30 feet in height, and covered with a hemispherical dome. Selections from sacred writings and quotes by notable people will be read by representatives of various faiths and traditions as they light a candle. The ceremony will spread the message of harmony and tolerance among the followers of all the religions, faiths, and beliefs of Pakistan.

Interfaith Water of Life Ceremony, February 3, at St. John the Baptist De La Salle Church. Selections from sacred writings and quotes by notable people will be read as part of the ceremony as representatives of different faiths and traditions pour water into a common bowl as a symbol of reconciliation and renewal.

Interfaith Children's Festival, February 5, at the Holy Savior’s Public School (Full Gospel Assembly Church). The children will participate in a poster competition and will draw posters with interfaith harmony and peacebuilding messages. The winners of the poster competition will be awarded prizes, and certificates of participation will be given to all participating students.

Debate Competition, February 6, among students of the universities and colleges of the Southern Punjab. The language for the debate will be English. RYS–Pakistan will award shields and certificates to the best debaters. All of the participating students will be awarded certificates of participation. The topic of the debate competition will be: “Television is the leading cause of violence in today's society.”

Press Conference, February 7, at the Multan Press Club Hall. RYS-Pakistan will invite one religious leader each from the Christian, Muslim, Hindu, and Sikh communities to share about the issues of interfaith harmony in Pakistan and answer questions from journalists. The Press Conference will also evaluate and highlight the activities conducted by RYS-Pakistan during World Interfaith Harmony Week.
