Coordinated jointly by Dr Anastasia Badder (Cambridge) and Dr Jo-Ann Myers (Leo Baeck College), this webinar continues conversations about learning religion in/through language.
Bringing together anthropologists, education researchers, and practitioners working in diverse settings, the discussion will explore how religious communities draw on language as a semiotic resource aimed at specific goals, and how different methodologies can reveal aspects of the aims, processes, factors, and outcomes of sacred language learning and use. Potential questions for this roundtable session include:- What distinguishes a religious language from a ‘mundane’ one?
- What definitional issues emerge when studying language practices in religious settings?
- What are the ethical challenges of researching religious language learning?
- What can the learning of religious languages reveal about language and literacy teaching and learning more broadly?
