University of Toronto students from all religious and academic backgrounds are welcome to participate in a weekly reading of scripture that opens new conversations and discovers interesting relationships across Jewish, Christian and Muslim faiths. Reading scripture is an experience in interfaith fellowship. All are welcome - participants include people of faith and of no faith tradition, although our focus is on discussing texts from Abrahamic traditions. Scriptural reasoning is an academic practice where you don't have to be an expert in scriptural studies. It was popularized at Oxford University and initiated at U of T by Professor Bob Gibbs, the Inaugural Director of the Jackman Humanities Institute, Professor Aver Emon, Director of the Institute for Islamic Studies, and Professor Paul Gooch, President of Victoria College, and led by graduate students Esther Reiser, Joseph Kim and David Cheater. The key to scriptural reasoning is understanding rather than agreement. The result is often a deeper appreciation of others' and your own scriptures and friendship across faith communities.
