NDP organized a Stakeholder’s Breakfast Meeting that hosted 20 community leaders and youth leaders on the importance of interfaith dialogue and tolerance in building social cohesion. The Interreligious Council of Uganda (IRCU) and Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) were also represented. This was held on Tuesday 5th February 2018 at Nile Dialogue Platform offices from 9.00 am to 12.00 pm.

The objective of this meeting was to generate ideas on how to celebrate our diversity and to raise awareness about the need for mutual respect, dialogue and tolerance among communities in Uganda

Ms Rahsidah Namulondo, a peace activist stressed the importance of seeking deeper understanding of ‘the other’ so as to strengthen our commitment to tolerance. “Information in form of cultural exchanges and other organic and non-structured engagements help in building stronger tolerance. If we do not arm ourselves with knowledge about the other, we are only playing a polite card that can easily crack”

The spokesperson of Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) Hajj Sereko Mutumba also urged members to use their spaces to encourage tolerance among the people since they are frequented by majority of Ugandans. “We must support the spread of the message of interfaith harmony and goodwill in our churches, mosques and other places in the best possible manner. This is what is expected of us”, he said.

Canon Joyce Niima, the guest speaker of the day called upon the participants to embrace harmonious living so as to have   a clear direction in life and to guarantee socio-economic progress in Uganda. She thanked Nile Dialogue Platform for its continuous support to works of peace in the country especially through interfaith and intercultural dialogue.
