Join us as we welcome Professor Rev. Johanna W. H. van Wijk-Bos who will discuss her most recent book: Wisdom Commentary – Deuteronomy. Johanna W. H. van Wijk-Bos is Professor Emerita of Hebrew Bible, which she taught at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary for 40 years. An ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), Johanna is the mother of J. Martin Bos, a grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her husband A. David Bos, a Presbyterian minister, author, poet, and activist, died Feb.12, 2011. At The Temple she participates as a student and Rabbi David’s assistant in weekly torah study. Her passion for the Hebrew text of the Bible dates to her teenage years in The Netherlands. Besides books on Ruth, Esther, Jonah, Ezra, and Nehemiah, she has published commentaries on the Torah and the Former Prophets. The work on Deuteronomy is part of a multi-volume series of commentaries on the Bible. Rabbi David represents one of the “contributing voices” in the volume.
Wisdom Commentary – Deuteronomy review:
“Biblical commentaries tend to present textual perspectives that are either Christian or Jewish, based on the religious orientation of the scholar. Johanna W. H. van Wijk-Bos breaks this mold by offering an indispensable perspective on the book of Deuteronomy. Written by a Christian biblical scholar who engages with a variety of Jewish sources, this commentary is truly one of a kind! This commentary fills a gap that has existed for too long.”
