The Islamic Commission of Spain (CIE) and the Spanish Episcopal Conference held a day of reflection, prayer, and fraternal encounter to commemorate the Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together, signed by His Holiness Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, on February 4, 2019, in the United Arab Emirates. This gathering took place at the Central Mosque of Madrid (Mosque of the Strait) on Tuesday, February 3, in an atmosphere of dialogue and shared commitment to coexistence, human dignity, and peace, reaffirming the enduring relevance of the Document as an ethical and spiritual framework for relations between religions and cultures. The President of the Islamic Commission of Spain, Dr. Aiman Adlbi, welcomed all attendees and emphasized in his address the central value of human dignity as the common foundation of all coexistence. He affirmed that “Allah has dignified humankind by virtue of being human, regardless of religion, color, or race. And all human beings are brothers and sisters because they come from the same Father, the same Mother, and the same Creator.” Representing the Spanish Episcopal Conference, Bishop Adolfo González Montes, speaking on behalf of the Episcopal Subcommittee for Interconfessional Relations and Interreligious Dialogue, delivered a moving address, highlighting the shared responsibility of Christian and Muslim believers in building the common good. He asserted that “Christians and Muslims have a commitment to seek together this coexistence based on respect for the free exercise of our respective religious faiths, which comprehensively inspire our morality and civic conduct.” For his part, the secretary of the Islamic Commission of Spain, Mohamed Ajana, contextualized the meaning of this meeting within the current social reality, noting: “We are living through a paradoxical historical moment.” On the one hand, technology allows us unprecedented hyperconnectivity; on the other, we are witnessing extreme polarization, deafening noise in public debate, and the rise of hate speech that fuels systemic distrust. During the meeting, which included the participation of Father Rafael Vázquez, Director of the Subcommittee for Interconfessional Relations and Interreligious Dialogue of the Episcopal Conference, and other prominent figures from the Catholic and Muslim communities, passages from the Holy Quran were recited, as well as readings from the New Testament, including the Beatitudes and the Lord's Prayer, as a symbolic expression of respect and spiritual closeness between the two religious traditions. A commitment text, inspired by the values that unite both communities, was also read aloud, reaffirming the defense of human dignity, justice, peace, and coexistence. One of its excerpts stated:“We are gathered in the name of ‘human fraternity,’ which embraces all people, unites them, and makes them equal. In the name of this fraternity, battered by the politics of fundamentalism and division, by systems of insatiable profit, and by hateful ideological trends that manipulate the actions and destinies of humankind.” In this context, the participants reaffirmed the central message that marked the entire day: “With this meeting, we wish to reaffirm that faith and religions, when lived authentically and not ideologically misinterpreted, are not a cause of division or conflict, but rather can strengthen fraternal relationships and lay the foundation for common coexistence and world peace.” As part of the program, Hicham Oulad Mhammed, delegate of the Islamic Commission of Spain in the Community of Madrid, offered attendees a guided tour of the Central Mosque of Madrid. During the tour, he explained, in an accessible and educational manner, basic aspects of the Islamic faith, Muslim religious practice, and the spiritual significance of the prayer space, fostering greater mutual understanding. The meeting concluded with a tasting and an informal dialogue, allowing attendees to share impressions and strengthen ties in a friendly and respectful atmosphere, reinforcing the spirit of fraternity that characterized the entire day. Through this meeting, the Islamic Commission of Spain reaffirms its firm commitment to a pluralistic society based on respect, mutual understanding, and interfaith collaboration as a path to peace, social cohesion, and the defense of religious freedom.Reinforcing the spirit of fraternity that characterized the entire day, the Islamic Commission of Spain reaffirms, through this meeting, its firm commitment to a pluralistic society based on respect, mutual understanding, and interreligious collaboration as a path to peace, social cohesion, and the defense of religious freedom.Reinforcing the spirit of fraternity that characterized the entire day, the Islamic Commission of Spain reaffirms, through this meeting, its firm commitment to a pluralistic society based on respect, mutual understanding, and interreligious collaboration as a path to peace, social cohesion, and the defense of religious freedom.
