When the United Nations launched World Interfaith Harmony Week in 2010, it set out to highlight the shared values that connect faith traditions; love of God, commitment to goodness, and care for one another.
Sixteen years later, observing this week feels different. In a world shaped by ongoing crises and unsettling news, the challenge we face goes beyond dialogue or mutual understanding. It calls for solidarity and cooperation for the common good, especially amid the rise of religious nationalism worldwide.
This reflection resonates deeply with our recent Harmony in Action – Gus Dur School for Peace VI workshop, where for two weeks, participants engaged with the theme of Freedom of Belief and Religion (FoBR). Together, we explored how social cohesion is built and sustained through a shared sense of solidarity, intentional multiculturalism, and the everyday practice of being good neighbours, while grounding these values in peacebuilding and eco-resilience efforts at the community level. These conversations were enriched by insights shared by Alamsyah Djafar as our guest speaker.
Harmony, today, asks more of us.
It calls us to move beyond tolerance toward collective responsibility; where faith, identity, and care for our shared environment become foundations for coexistence and dignity.
✨ Harmony in Action begins when solidarity becomes a daily practice. ✨
